A capo is the simplest piece of gear a guitarist owns — a clamp that shortens every string at once — and also the one most often blamed for mysterious tuning problems. “My guitar was perfectly in tune until I put the capo on!” is half true: the capo didn’t break your tuning, but it did change it, in a predictable way you can fix in ten seconds. What a capo actually does
Fretting a string raises its pitch by one semitone per fret; a capo simply does that to all six strings simultaneously and holds it. Capo at the 2nd fret and your open strings become F♯–B–E–A–C♯–F♯ — everything two semitones up. Play a G-shaped chord and the sound that comes out is A major. The shapes you know produce new keys:

Why the capo pulls you sharp
A capo doesn’t just shorten the strings — it presses them down to the fret, and pressing a string stretches it slightly, raising its pitch a few cents beyond the intended semitones. How much depends on:
- Clamp pressure. The big one. A capo cranked far tighter than needed can pull strings 5–15 cents sharp — squarely into “audibly sour” territory (see how many cents you can hear). Spring capos are the usual offenders since their pressure isn’t adjustable.
- Position within the fret. A capo sitting far behind the fret wire has to push the string further down to reach the fret, stretching it more. Right behind the wire, the string barely deflects.
- String action and gauge. High action means more stretch for every string; wound strings and plain strings stretch differently, so the error isn’t even uniform across the six — which is why capoed chords can sound sour in a way you can’t quite name.
The ten-second ritual: clamp, then check
- Tune the guitar open, carefully, with a chromatic tuner.
- Clamp the capo just behind the fret wire — close enough to almost touch it — with only as much pressure as produces clean, buzz-free notes. If your capo has an adjustable screw, back it off until notes buzz, then add a quarter turn.
- Check the tuner again with the capo on. Pluck each string; the tuner reads the new, higher notes (capo 2: F♯, B, E, A, C♯, F♯) and any of them running sharp will show immediately.
- If a string reads sharp: first try re-seating the capo (closer to the fret, less pressure, square to the neck) — this fixes it 90% of the time. Only touch the tuning pegs as a last resort, and remember to re-tune open when the capo comes off.
Capo myths, corrected
- “Capos damage your neck.” A properly tensioned capo exerts less pressure than your fretting hand. Leaving one clamped for months isn’t ideal for the strings (dents), but sessions-long use is harmless.
- “You shouldn’t re-tune with the capo on.” Mostly true, but as etiquette not law: prefer fixing capo seating, because peg adjustments made with the capo on are wrong the moment it comes off. If one stubborn string still reads sharp after re-seating, a small peg correction is fine — just expect to undo it.

- “Partial capos need special tuning.” No — a partial capo (covering 3–5 strings) changes which open notes you have, not how the guitar is tuned. It’s “fake open tuning” with standard tuning intact, which is exactly its charm. (For the real thing, see Open G and Open D.)
Choosing and using capos, briefly
- Trigger/spring capos: fastest on and off, one-handed — but fixed pressure, usually too much. Fine if you follow the check ritual.
- Screw-adjustable capos: the tuning-friendliest choice; dial in minimum pressure for your guitar’s action and it stays right.
- Strap/toggle capos: cheap and light; pressure control is coarse but workable.
- Whatever the type: square to the neck, just behind the wire, minimum pressure, check the tuner. Every sour capo story traces back to one of those four.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my guitar go out of tune after I REMOVE the capo?
Two mechanisms: the capo’s pressure pushed string segments across the nut and saddle, and when released, that displaced tension doesn’t fully return — especially if the nut slots bind. Does a capo work the same on a 12-string or classical guitar?
Same principle, more care. Twelve strings need a wide, strong capo and are even more sensitive to pressure-induced sharpness across the octave pairs. Classical guitars have flat fretboards and low-tension nylon strings — use a flat (not radiused) capo, and expect nylon to need a minute to settle after clamping.
Is playing with a capo cheating?
No more than choosing a key is cheating. A capo changes the instrument’s open pitch set — the same thing a re-tuning does — to serve the song and the singer. Professionals use them constantly, not least because open-string voicings simply sound better than barre equivalents in many arrangements.
Capo 2 in E♭ tuning — where am I?
Concert F♯… no wait — E♭ standard is one semitone below concert, capo 2 adds two, so you’re net one semitone above standard shapes: an E shape sounds as F. This two-system math is exactly why bands that live in E♭ tuning keep a capo in the case: capo 1 returns them to concert standard instantly.
