How to Tune a Guitar by Ear (3 Methods That Actually Work)

The fifth-fret method, harmonics, and beat-listening — three time-tested ways to tune a guitar without a tuner, why the B string breaks the pattern, and how ear tuning makes you a better musician.

Every guitarist should be able to get roughly in tune with nothing but their ears. Not because tuners are bad — a good chromatic tuner is more precise than any human ear — but because ear tuning trains the exact skill that makes you a better player: hearing when two notes agree. It also saves you at the campfire, at the open mic with a dead battery, and in any moment your phone isn’t handy.

This guide teaches the three classic methods, in the order you should learn them, plus the listening trick — beats — that makes all three actually work.

First, learn to hear beats

When two notes are almost — but not exactly — the same pitch, you don’t hear two notes. You hear one note with a slow pulse in its volume: wah… wah… wah… That pulsing is called beating, and its speed equals the difference between the two frequencies. Two strings 3 Hz apart beat three times per second. As you tune one string toward the other, the beating slows… and slows… and finally stops. When the wobble disappears, the strings are in tune with each other. That single skill is the entire foundation of ear tuning.

Get one reference string first

Ear tuning tunes the guitar to itself. That means one string must be right before the others can follow. Any reference works: a piano, another guitarist’s tuned instrument, a pitch pipe — or the tones below. Tune your low E (or the A string, if you prefer the classic A-440 anchor), then build the rest from it.

Match your low E to the first tone, then tune the rest of the guitar from that one string using the methods below. Come back and spot-check your result.

Method 1: The fifth-fret method

The workhorse. Each open string (almost) matches the note five frets up on the string below it:

  1. Press the 6th string at the 5th fret — that’s an A. Pluck it together with the open 5th string. Listen for beating; tune the 5th string until the wobble stops.
  2. 5th string, 5th fret (D) → tune the open 4th string.
  3. 4th string, 5th fret (G) → tune the open 3rd string.
  4. 3rd string, 4th fret (B) → tune the open 2nd string. Note the exception! The B string is tuned a major third above the G string, not a fourth, so the pattern shifts to the 4th fret here — the single most common ear tuning mistake.
  5. 2nd string, 5th fret (E) → tune the open 1st string.

Work slowly, always tuning the open string up into pitch from slightly below. When you finish, strum an E major chord. If something sounds sour, errors have stacked up — it happens, because each string inherits any error from the previous one. Re-check pairs from the top.

Method 2: Harmonics (more precise, hands-free listening)

Touch a string lightly directly above the 5th or 7th fret wire — don’t press — pluck, and lift your finger. You get a pure, chiming harmonic that rings on after you let go. Harmonics are wonderful for tuning because both hands are free while the notes sustain, and their purity makes beats extremely easy to hear:

  • 6th string 5th-fret harmonic = 5th string 7th-fret harmonic — tune until the beating stops.
  • 5th string 5th-fret harmonic = 4th string 7th-fret harmonic.
  • 4th string 5th-fret harmonic = 3rd string 7th-fret harmonic.
  • For the B string: play the 6th string 7th-fret harmonic and match the open 2nd string to it.
  • For the high E: 6th string 5th-fret harmonic matches the open 1st string two octaves up — or just use the fifth-fret method for the last step.

Method 3: Octaves and unisons (the checking method)

Less a tuning sequence than a verification pass — and the fastest way to find which string is off after the first two methods:

  • Octaves: the open 1st and open 6th strings are the same note two octaves apart; fret the 4th string at the 2nd fret and it should agree with both open E strings. Octaves blend into a single clean sound when true.
  • Unisons: the 1st string at the 5th fret is A — compare with the open 5th string two octaves down, or fret the 2nd string at the 10th fret against the open 1st string’s A at fret 5.
  • Chord test: play E major, then G major, then D major. Each chord stresses different strings; one chord sounding sour while others ring clean points straight at the culprit string.

Why ear tuning makes you better (even with a tuner in your pocket)

Tuning by ear is interval training in disguise. Every fifth-fret comparison is a unison, every harmonic pair a perfect interval, every check an octave — the exact intervals your ear needs to internalize for playing melodies, harmonizing and improvising. Players who tune by ear for a few weeks routinely report that out-of-tune notes start to bother them in a way they never did before. That sensitivity is a musician’s superpower, and five minutes a day at the tuning pegs builds it free of charge.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate can ear tuning actually get?

With beats, surprisingly accurate — beating is audible well below the level where two separately-played notes sound different. A practiced ear can bring string pairs within 1–2 cents using slow beats. The weakness isn’t precision, it’s accumulation: five sequential pairings can stack small errors, which is why the octave/chord checks matter.

Why does my guitar sound fine alone but wrong with other instruments?

You tuned relative to your own low E, which had drifted from concert pitch. The guitar agrees with itself but not with A-440 instruments. Anchor the first string to a real reference — the tones above, or the free chromatic tuner — and the problem disappears.

Is the fifth-fret method or harmonics better?

Learn fifth-fret first — it teaches fretting-hand awareness and works on any guitar, including ones with weak harmonics (nylon strings mute them somewhat). Harmonics are faster and more precise once you can produce them cleanly, especially standing up or in noisy rooms, since the chime cuts through.

I can't hear the beats at all. What am I doing wrong?

Three usual causes: the two notes are still far apart (beating turns into roughness or two distinct pitches — get closer first); you’re plucking too quietly or letting notes die (both notes must overlap, ringing together); or room noise is masking the pulse. Try it with harmonics, which sustain and expose beats most clearly — and practice with the cents lab where nothing else is ringing.
