Here is the honest answer up front: an accordion is not tuned the way any string instrument is. There are no pegs to turn, no pins, no screws that move pitch. Every note comes from a steel reed, and the only way to change a reed’s pitch is to remove metal from it with a file — permanently. That is why accordion tuning is a trade, why a full professional tuning is priced like the skilled labor it is, and why the most valuable thing you can do yourself is not filing at all. It’s measuring — and measuring is genuinely easy.
Where the pitch actually comes from
Inside the accordion, behind the grille and the bellows, sit rows of wooden reed blocks. Mounted on them with beeswax-and-rosin are hundreds of reed plates: small aluminum frames, each carrying two steel tongues — one that sounds when the bellows push, one when they pull. A tongue’s pitch is set by its stiffness and its mass. File metal off the tip and the tongue gets effectively lighter, so it vibrates faster: the note goes sharp. File near the base, by the rivet, and the tongue gets more flexible: the note goes flat. Take a reed block out where you can work on it and each reed sounds a few cents different than it will re-installed behind valves and grille. Professionals tune on a tuning table and apply known per-note offsets learned from exactly this instrument — the amateur files to zero on the bench and reassembles a sour accordion.
- The metal only comes off — it never goes back on. Overshoot flat past the target and you must now file the tip to come back up, thinning the reed again. A few careless cycles of this and the reed is scrap.
- The reed must be supported while you scratch it, or the tongue bends — and a bent reed doesn’t just drift in pitch, it chokes or rattles. Slipping a thin steel shim under the tongue is step one of every stroke.
- Old wax and leather valves fail when disturbed. Decades-old mounting wax cracks when blocks are handled; brittle valve leathers curl. A tuning visit on a vintage instrument routinely turns into re-waxing and re-valving — which is the actual job, with tuning at the end of it.

- Rescue a single silent or wildly-off note. A note that suddenly died or went badly sour usually isn’t a tuning problem: it’s a speck of debris caught in the reed slot or a detached valve flap. Opening the back, finding the reed (your chart tells you push or pull side), and dislodging debris with a thin feeler is legitimate owner-level maintenance — no filing involved.
- Learn reed tuning deliberately, on a sacrificial instrument. With a cheap donor accordion, a reed-lifting shim, needle files and your tuner, the craft is absolutely learnable — scratch, reassemble, measure, repeat. Expect your first full-instrument attempt to take days, and treat that as the price of a genuinely rare skill.
- Leave full retunes, re-waxing and re-valving to a technician unless the instrument is disposable. Four hundred reeds, each needing bench-to-instrument offsets, is a week of experienced work — that’s the quote you’re paying for.
