There is no single “harp tuning”

Unlike a guitar, a harp is not tuned to a fixed set of six notes — it is tuned to a scale, one string per note, running straight up the instrument. So the first thing to establish is not how to turn the wrench but which scale your harp is supposed to play. Count your strings and pick the matching map above.

Small lyre harps are almost always in C major, with no sharps or flats anywhere. Lap and lever harps are a different story — see below. Either way the loop is identical for every string on every harp: pluck, read, nudge, repeat.

The routine

  1. Start at the lowest string and work upward. Going in order means you never lose your place on an instrument where every string looks much like its neighbour.
  2. Seat the wrench fully before turning. A tuning wrench that is only half-on will round off the square pin, which is a genuinely expensive mistake. Push it all the way down onto the pin, then turn.
  3. Move in tiny amounts. Harp pins are geared far more directly than guitar machine heads — a few degrees of rotation is a large pitch change. Nudge, release, pluck, read. Do not turn while watching the dial and expecting it to creep.
  4. Come up to the note, not down onto it. If you overshoot sharp, go back below the target and approach from underneath so the string settles under tension.
  5. Go round again. Every string you tighten pulls on the soundboard, which slackens the ones you already did. Two full passes minimum, three on a new harp.

Lever harps: tune with every lever down

A lever harp has a small lever at the top of each string that raises that string by a semitone when engaged. That means the pitch a string is tuned to and the pitch it plays are two different things, and getting this backwards is the most common harp tuning mistake.

Always tune with every lever disengaged (down). Most lever harps are then tuned to E♭ major in that state — three flats — so that engaging levers gives you access to the sharper keys players actually use. Check what your maker specifies before assuming; some smaller lever harps are set up in C.

Frequently asked questions

How is a harp tuned?

One string per note, straight up a scale, using a tuning wrench on the pin at the top of each string. Small lyre harps are tuned to C major with no sharps or flats; lever harps are usually tuned to E♭ major with all levers down. Work from the lowest string upward, move the wrench in very small amounts, and go round the whole instrument at least twice — each string you tighten slackens the others.

What notes is a 7-string lyre tuned to?

C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, B4 — one octave of C major, lowest and thickest string first. A 16-string runs G3 up to A5 and a 19-string F3 up to C6, both also in C major. Select your string count in the reference tones above to hear every target.

Why won't my harp stay in tune?

If it is new, or newly restrung, it simply has not finished stretching — that takes weeks, not days, and there is nothing to fix. Beyond that, harps respond strongly to temperature and humidity because a large soundboard is under constant tension. If a single string slips while its neighbours hold, that pin may be loose in the soundboard and needs a technician rather than more turning.

Do I need a special harp tuner?

No — any chromatic tuner works, including this one, because a harp string is just a note like any other. What actually helps is the octave display: on an instrument with nineteen strings that all look similar, seeing “C5” rather than just “C” tells you immediately whether you are on the right string.
