Every harp arrives out of tune. It isn’t a defect — a new instrument crosses an ocean in a box, its strings stretching and its wood adjusting the whole way, and the little lyre harp that shows up sounding like a haunted music box just needs what every harp needs: a chromatic tuner in one hand, the tuning wrench from the accessory pouch in the other, and a calm ten minutes. This guide covers the whole family — 7, 16 and 19-string lyre harps, lap harps and lever harps — because underneath, tuning them is one identical loop: pluck, read, nudge, repeat.
First, learn what your harp is supposed to be tuned to
Unlike a guitar, there is no single “harp tuning” — a harp is tuned to a scale, and which scale depends on the instrument:
- Lyre harps (7, 10, 16, 19 strings) are almost always shipped in C major — the plain do-re-mi scale with no sharps or flats, rising one letter per string. A 7-string runs C4–B4, a 16-string G3–A5, a 19-string F3–C6. Some makers ship G major or a pentatonic scale instead, so check the card in the box — but if there’s no card, C major is the overwhelming default.
- Lever harps (the Celtic-style harps with a flip lever above each string) are usually tuned in E♭ major with every lever down. That sounds odd until you see the trick: each lever raises its string a semitone, so from E♭ you can reach C major, G major, D major and everything in between just by flipping levers. Smaller lap harps without a full set of levers usually live in plain C major.
- Pedal harps — the concert-hall giants — are tuned in C♭ major and reshaped on the fly by seven foot pedals. If you own one of these you also have a harp teacher; we’ll focus on the other kinds.
One convention carries across all of them and makes life much easier: C strings are dyed red and F strings blue or black on lever and pedal harps. Many budget lyres skip the colors — which is exactly why their string numbers matter, and why the note maps below exist.
Every string, every size

All maps assume standard C-major factory tuning. If your maker’s chart says G major or pentatonic, follow the chart — the routine below stays the same.
The tuning routine, step by step
- Seat the wrench on the correct pin, then prove it. Before turning anything, pluck the string and turn the wrench a hair — the tuner’s needle should move. If it doesn’t, you are on a neighboring pin, and cranking it while watching a string that never changes is the classic way beginners snap strings.
- Read the letter and the octave, not just the needle. The tuner should show the letter from the map above — C4, not C5, and certainly not B3. A brand-new, badly slack string can read a whole letter or octave off; get the name right first, then worry about the needle.
- Tune up to the note, never down onto it. If a string is sharp, drop it clearly below the target and come back up. Strings pulled up to pitch settle and hold; strings released down to pitch keep slipping flat as the tension equalizes over the pin.
- Make absurdly small movements. The friction pins on lyres and lap harps are far more sensitive than guitar tuners — a few degrees of rotation can be 20 cents. Think of turning a stiff watch crown, not a doorknob.
- Mute the neighbors while you work. Rest your spare fingers on the strings either side of the one you’re tuning. Harp strings ring sympathetically, and a microphone tuner will happily lock onto the loud neighbor instead of the string you actually plucked.
- Do a full second pass. Tightening the last strings adds tension that pulls the frame — and the strings you tuned first — slightly flat. On a freshly strung harp the second pass matters more than the first; on a settled one it’s thirty seconds of confirmation.
Why a new harp won’t stay in tune (for a while)
Fresh nylon strings stretch — a lot. For the first one or two weeks a new lyre or a newly re-strung harp will drift noticeably flat every day, and that is the string settling, not you failing. Tune it daily and the drift shrinks; most instruments stabilize inside two weeks. After that, expect a quick touch-up at the start of each session — a harp holds tension across dozens of strings on a wooden frame that swells and shrinks with the weather, so drifting a few cents overnight is normal behavior, not a flaw. Keep the harp out of direct sun, away from radiators, and in its bag or case when you’re not playing, and it will drift less.
If one particular pin never holds — the string sounds right, then sags flat within minutes — the friction pin itself may be loose in its hole. On zither-style pins the standard fix is gentle inward pressure: press the wrench lightly toward the harp body as you make the final tuning movement, so the tapered pin seats deeper and grips.
Lever harps: the E♭ logic, briefly
New lever-harp owners often tune everything to C major “because that’s normal” — and then discover half their sheet music is unreachable. The instrument is designed around E♭: tune with all levers disengaged to E♭ major (that is, every A, B and E string a semitone flat), and the levers give you back A, B and E naturals when a key needs them. Flip nothing and you play in E♭; flip the right levers and you have C, F, G, D and more. Two practical rules follow: always tune with the levers off (an engaged lever presses the string and lies to your tuner by a few cents), and follow your maker’s chart if it explicitly says the harp is designed for C — some small lever harps are.
Frequently asked questions
How often does a harp need tuning?
Realistically: at the start of every playing session, quickly. A settled harp usually needs only a handful of strings nudged a few cents, which takes a minute or two. A new harp, or one with fresh strings, needs a full daily pass for one to two weeks while the nylon finishes stretching. If your harp was in tune yesterday and is wildly out today, suspect a temperature or humidity swing before you suspect the harp.
What key should a lyre harp be tuned to?
C major unless you have a reason to choose otherwise — it matches nearly all lyre tablature and tutorials, and it’s what the maps above show. G major is the common alternative some makers ship, and pentatonic tunings (five notes per octave, no semitones) are popular for meditative playing because every string sounds good with every other. Whatever you pick, pick it deliberately: your tuning must match whatever tabs or sheet music you learn from.
My tuner won't pick up the lowest strings. What am I doing wrong?
Low, quiet strings are the hardest thing you’ll ask a microphone to hear. Pluck the string near its middle with a little more flesh (a fuller pluck excites the fundamental, not just the bright overtones), get the microphone closer to the soundboard, and kill background noise — fans and traffic sit exactly in the low-frequency range you’re asking the tuner to read. On a phone, aim the mic end of the phone at the sound holes.
The letter is right but my harp still sounds wrong against recordings. Why?
Check the octave digits, then check the whole instrument’s reference. If every string is consistently sharp or flat by the same amount, your tuner’s reference pitch may have been changed from A = 440 Hz — it happens to the best of us after a curious visit to the settings. Do I need a special harp tuner?
No — any chromatic tuner works, including the free Pano Tuner in this site. Chromatic means it names whatever pitch it hears, which is exactly what a many-stringed instrument needs; instrument-specific “guitar tuners” that only know six notes are the thing to avoid.
