How to Tune a Bass Guitar (4-String and 5-String)

Bass strings vibrate so low that tuners — and speakers — struggle with them. The exact frequencies for 4- and 5-string bass, why your tuner jumps octaves on the low E, and the harmonic trick that fixes it.

A bass guitar is tuned like the bottom four guitar strings — E, A, D, G — but one full octave lower, and that octave changes everything about the tuning experience. The low E vibrates just 41 times per second; a 5-string’s low B, under 31. Down there, tuners get indecisive, phone speakers go silent, and a technique that works perfectly on guitar produces a needle that wanders like a compass at the north pole. The target notes and frequencies

Standard 4-string bass is E1–A1–D2–G2. A 5-string adds B0 below; a 6-string adds a high C3 on top. Tap through them:

Heads up: small phone speakers physically can't reproduce 41 Hz — you may mostly hear the note's overtones. Use headphones or decent speakers for the low strings.

Why tuners struggle with low bass notes

  • Slow vibrations need long listening windows. A tuner must observe several full cycles to measure a pitch. At 41 Hz, each cycle takes 24 milliseconds — catching enough of them makes the tuner feel laggy and jumpy compared to tuning a guitar.
  • Octave confusion. A bass note’s strongest component is often its second harmonic, one octave up. Cheap tuners flip between E1 and E2 mid-note. (A good chromatic tuner shows the octave number — watch it.)
  • The attack lies. The first instant of a hard pluck is sharp and full of clank; the pitch settles a moment later. On bass this effect is bigger than on guitar.

The technique that fixes all of it

  1. Pluck gently, over the end of the fingerboard. A soft fingerstyle pluck near the neck produces a rounder, fundamental-heavy tone that tuners love. Avoid slap or hard picking while tuning.
  2. Let the note breathe, then read. Skip the first half-second; judge the reading once the needle settles into a steady hover.
  3. Use the 12th-fret harmonic for stubborn strings. Touch the string lightly over the 12th fret, pluck, release. The harmonic sounds one octave up — 82.4 Hz for the E string — right in the range where tuners are rock solid, and it rings long and pure. Tune until the harmonic is spot on; the open string follows automatically.
  4. Approach from below, as always: loosen slightly flat, then tighten up into pitch so the tuning gears stay loaded.
  5. Second pass. Bass strings carry serious tension; changing one affects the neck enough to nudge its neighbors a few cents.

Tuning by ear on bass

The guitar’s fifth-fret method works identically on bass — every pair of neighboring strings is a perfect fourth, with no B-string exception to remember: 4th string 5th fret = open 3rd string, and so on. Harmonics work even better: the 5th-fret harmonic of each string should match the 7th-fret harmonic of the string above it, and bass harmonics ring long and clear, making beats easy to hear. Rough in by ear, confirm with the tuner.

Drop D and other bass tunings

Everything from the guitar world maps down an octave. Drop D bass (D1–A1–D2–G2) follows a band’s drop-D guitars; half-step down (E♭1–A♭1–D♭1–G♭2) matches E♭-standard guitars. The chromatic tuner workflow is identical — read the note name and octave, center the needle. Just note that detuned bass strings lose tension fast: below D standard, most players move to heavier gauges to keep the low string articulate.

Frequently asked questions

My tuner says E but the octave number is wrong. Does it matter?

It matters as information: if the display says E2 while your open string plays, the tuner has locked onto the octave harmonic, not the fundamental. The cents reading is still usable — harmonics track the string exactly — but if the number flips between octaves mid-note, trust the harmonic-method reading instead.

Should I tune a bass with the tone knob up or down?

If you’re tuning plugged in (through an amp or interface into a mic’d tuner), roll the tone knob down and use the neck pickup — fewer bright overtones means a cleaner fundamental for the tuner. Acoustically into a microphone, just pluck gently near the neck.

Why does my new bass string sound out of tune with itself?

Long, heavy strings are the most sensitive to winding quality and dead spots. A fresh string that sounds “off” everywhere often just needs a day of stretching and settling; one that never cleans up may be twisted (unwind and reseat it) or simply defective — it happens more with bass strings than guitar strings.

Do I need a special bass tuner?

No — you need a chromatic tuner with good low-frequency behavior and an octave display. The harmonic trick sidesteps the hard part entirely, putting the measured note in a range any decent tuner nails. Clip-on tuners that sense vibration through the headstock also work well on bass, since they ignore room noise.
