How to Use an Online Tuner for Ukulele and Violin

Ukulele and violin each have their own tuning logic — reentrant strings, perfect fifths, pegs and fine tuners. This guide walks through tuning both instruments accurately with a microphone-based online tuner.

An online chromatic tuner listens through your microphone, finds the nearest of the twelve notes, and shows how far off you are — which means the same free tool that tunes a guitar also tunes a ukulele, a violin, and just about anything else with a pitch. What changes is not the tool but the target notes and the technique, and those are different enough on these two instruments to deserve their own guide.

First, the targets

A standard (soprano, concert or tenor) ukulele is tuned G–C–E–A. A violin is tuned G–D–A–E in perfect fifths. Tap through both below — training your ear on the targets makes every tuning session faster:

Note the ukulele surprise: the 4th (top) string is tuned HIGHER than the two strings below it. That's reentrant tuning, and it's correct.

Understand reentrant tuning before you start

On a guitar, strings go low to high in order. A standard ukulele breaks that rule: the string closest to your chin — the 4th string — is a high G (G4, 392 Hz), higher in pitch than the C and E strings below it. This “reentrant” tuning is what gives the ukulele its bright, bell-like strum where no string is much lower than the others.

The routine

  1. Open the online tuner and allow microphone access. Get within about half a meter of the mic, in a quiet room.
  2. Tune in this order: C (3rd) → E (2nd) → G (4th) → A (1st). Starting from the lowest-pitched string and working up keeps neck-tension changes small.
  3. Pluck once, moderately, and let the note ring. Check the letter and octave first (C4, E4, G4, A4), then center the needle.
  4. Always finish each string by tuning up into the note. Ukulele friction pegs and geared tuners alike hold better with the mechanism loaded against the string’s pull.
  5. Do a second pass — nylon strings respond to every change on their neighbors.

Why violinists tune differently

The violin has no frets and enormous string tension relative to its size, and it is tuned with two different mechanisms: large wooden pegs at the scroll for big changes, and small metal fine tuners at the tailpiece for precise ones. A beginner should do as much as possible with the fine tuners — pegs require a practiced push-and-turn technique and can slip or jump past the target. The routine

  1. Start with the A string (A4 = 440 Hz). This is the violinist’s anchor note — orchestras literally tune to it. Bow gently and steadily, or pluck if bowing while watching a screen is awkward.
  2. Read the tuner: letter first, then the needle. If you are within a semitone, use the fine tuner (righty-tighty raises pitch). If you are far off, use the peg in small motions, pressing it inward as you turn so it holds.
  3. Then tune D4 → G3 → E5. Bow each string on its own, in the middle between bridge and fingerboard, with light, even pressure — pressing hard bends the pitch sharp.
  4. Cross-check with double stops: bow A + D together, then D + G, then A + E. Each pair is a perfect fifth, which sounds smooth and “open” when true, and pulses (beats) when one string is off.

Getting the best reading from any microphone tuner

  • Kill background noise — fans, traffic, other people. The tuner locks onto the loudest pitch it hears.
  • One note at a time. Damp the other strings lightly so sympathetic ringing doesn’t muddy the signal.
  • Give it a second. Judge the settled reading, not the flurry during the attack.
  • Distance matters less than quiet. Half a meter from a phone or laptop mic is plenty for both instruments.
  • Check the reference pitch. A chromatic tuner should be set to A4 = 440 Hz unless you have a specific reason otherwise (playing along with an orchestra tuned to 442, for instance).

Frequently asked questions

My ukulele's 4th string reads G but sounds wrong. What happened?

Almost certainly the octave: it is at G3 instead of G4 (or vice versa if you have a low-G string set). Check the octave number on the tuner. High-G (reentrant) is standard for soprano, concert and most tenor ukes; low-G is a deliberate choice requiring a thicker 4th string.

Why won't my violin peg stay where I put it?

Violin pegs are held purely by friction — they must be pressed into the pegbox as you turn, like a corkscrew going in. If a peg still slips when seated firmly, the fit may need attention from a luthier (peg compound helps mild cases). Meanwhile, get close with the peg and do the last stretch with the fine tuner.

Can I tune a violin entirely with fine tuners?

If the string is within roughly a semitone of the target, usually yes. Fine tuners have limited travel, though — when one is screwed nearly all the way in, unwind it most of the way, take up the difference with the peg, and finish with the fine tuner again.

Do baritone ukuleles use the same tuning?

No — baritones are tuned D–G–B–E (like a guitar’s top four strings), linearly, with no reentrant string. A chromatic tuner handles it the same way: read letter and octave (D3, G3, B3, E4), center the needle.

Which is harder to keep in tune, ukulele or violin?

Fresh nylon ukulele strings drift the most until they settle. A healthy violin with well-fitted pegs holds tune well but reacts to temperature and humidity quickly because of its light construction. In both cases the cure is the same: check before every session — it takes under a minute.
