One number explains almost everything difficult about an 8-string guitar: 46.25 Hz. That is the low F♯ in standard 8-string tuning, and it sits only two semitones above the low E of a 4-string bass guitar — an instrument that reaches that pitch on a 34-inch scale. An 8-string is asked to produce nearly the same note on a neck often 25.5 to 27 inches long. Scale length, string gauge, fanned frets and half the arguments on extended-range forums all follow from that single mismatch.
The tuning itself is the easy part
F♯ standard is F♯1–B1–E2–A2–D3–G3–B3–E4: a 7-string in B standard with one more string a perfect fourth below the low B. The six upper strings remain at exactly standard guitar pitch, so every chord shape and scale you know transfers with nothing relearned, and the pattern of fourths continues unbroken to the bottom. Nothing about the note choices is difficult. The difficulty is entirely mechanical.
Scale length: why 25.5 inches does not work
A string’s tension at a given pitch depends on its length, its mass and how far it is stretched. Shorten the length and you must add mass or lose tension. At 25.5 inches, a low F♯ at any gauge a guitar nut will accept ends up slack — and slack strings misbehave in recognisable ways: the pitch flutters audibly for the first moment after picking, the note reads as an undefined rumble rather than a pitch, fretted notes buzz, and intonation refuses to settle.
This is why most 8-strings ship at 27 to 28.6 inches. The extra length carries the same gauge at substantially more tension, which tightens the attack and lets the note speak as a pitch. It is also why a 25.5-inch 8-string is a common regret purchase: no amount of careful tuning compensates for a scale that is short for the note.
Fanned frets: refusing the compromise
A single scale length cannot serve both ends of an 8-string well. Long enough for the low F♯ makes the high E stiff and awkward to bend; short enough for a comfortable high E leaves the F♯ slack. A multiscale neck sidesteps the trade entirely by giving each string its own scale length — a long bass side around 27–28.6 inches, a shorter treble side near 25.5 inches — with the frets angled between them.
The frets are not uniformly slanted. One of them, the perpendicular fret, stays square to the strings, and the rest angle progressively further away in both directions. Where the builder puts it is a genuine design decision with an audible and tactile consequence: putting it low on the neck pulls the fan toward the nut and keeps open-position chords feeling close to normal, at the cost of a more extreme angle high up; putting it higher does the reverse.
Tuning and intonation routine
- Tune the six upper strings first, as a normal guitar, then the low B, then the low F♯ last. The two heaviest strings move the neck most.
- Pick the F♯ softly and read the sustain. A hard pick stretches a low string sharp for the first fraction of a second — on an 8-string that spike can be tens of cents, which makes a perfectly good tuner look broken.
- Do a full second pass, then a third if you changed strings. Eight strings carry substantially more total tension than six, and the neck keeps moving.
- Check intonation on the F♯ every string change. Compare the 12th-fret harmonic to the fretted 12th; heavy, stiff strings go sharp when fretted more than thin ones, so the lowest string is both the most likely to be off and the most audible when it is.
- Check the nut slot and saddle if you have gone up in gauge. A .080-plus string that does not sit cleanly in its slot will bind, slip, and read as a tuning-stability problem that is really a fitting problem.

The part nobody warns you about: your amp
A perfectly tuned, properly gauged low F♯ can still sound like mud, and the cause is often downstream of the guitar entirely. A 46 Hz fundamental is below what many guitar speakers usefully reproduce, and guitar amps are voiced around a six-string’s 82 Hz low E. The result is that the fundamental partly vanishes while the upper harmonics come through, or the low end simply overwhelms the speaker. Extended-range players commonly high-pass the guitar signal deliberately, or route the lowest strings to a bass rig. Worth knowing before you conclude the instrument or the tuning is at fault.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 27-inch scale enough, or do I need a multiscale guitar?
A straight 27-inch scale is genuinely enough for most players in F♯ standard — plenty of well-regarded 8-strings are built exactly that way and the low F♯ behaves. Multiscale earns its keep when you want the low F♯ tight without making the top strings feel stiff, or when you play in Drop E and need more from the bottom string still. It is a refinement rather than a requirement, and it costs something in return: angled frets take adjustment, and some players never fully warm to them. If you are choosing your first 8-string, scale length matters far more than whether the frets are fanned.
What gauge does the low F♯ need?
Broadly the .070–.090 range, and where you land inside it depends heavily on scale length — a 28.6-inch bass side can carry a lighter string at the same tension than a 25.5-inch neck can. That is a far wider spread than guitarists are used to thinking about, and it is worth buying singles to experiment rather than committing to a full set. Be aware that anything at the heavy end may not fit existing nut slots or bridge saddles without work.

Should I go 8-string or use a 7-string tuned lower?
If you want the low F♯ available while keeping everything else where it is, an 8-string is the honest answer — that is precisely what the extra string is for. Tuning a 7-string down to reach F♯ moves every string down with it, so you lose the standard-pitch range you were keeping, and you land in the same tension problem on an instrument that has one fewer string to show for it. The exception is if you only occasionally want one low note, in which case a drop tuning on a 7-string is simpler than owning another guitar.
If what you actually want is your whole sound lower rather than more range underneath it, a baritone guitar is a different and often better answer than an eighth string.
