Nine notes, and none of them yours to move

A D Kurd handpan — by a wide margin the most common scale — is a D3 ding in the centre surrounded by eight tone fields sounding A3, B♭3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4 and A4. That is the complete D natural minor scale with nothing omitted, which is why this scale spread the way it did: most simple melodies land somewhere on it.

What makes a handpan different from everything else on this site is that the tuning is not your business. On a guitar you turn a peg. On a kalimba you tap a tine. On a handpan there is no adjustment at all: the pitches are hammered into the steel, and getting them back is a maker’s job. This page is about telling whether that has become necessary — which is a genuinely useful thing a tuner can do, and a different question from how to fix it.

Why one note is three notes

Strike a tone field and you hear one note. What is actually sounding is three tuned partials: the fundamental, the octave above it, and the twelfth — an octave and a fifth. On a well-made instrument the maker has hammered all three into alignment, and that alignment is what gives a handpan its singing, bell-like quality instead of the clank of a piece of struck steel.

This is the reason amateur retuning goes so badly. Moving the fundamental of a field is not one adjustment; it is three that have to stay in agreement, on a curved surface where hammer work in one place changes the tension everywhere around it. A strike in the wrong spot can detune the neighbouring fields, flatten a field’s sustain, or leave a dent that no amount of corrective work will fully take out.

The zigzag: why the note map is not a clock face

Handpan fields ascend in an alternating pattern — first note low left, second low right, third further left, fourth further right — working outward and upward around the ding. It looks arbitrary and it is not.

Adjacent fields on a shell interact acoustically. Placing consecutive scale notes side by side would put a whole tone between neighbours and set them fighting; the zigzag guarantees that any two adjacent fields are a third or more apart, which keeps them acoustically separated. It also lays the scale out so both hands can play it comfortably.

The practical consequence for tuning: you cannot read the scale by going round the shell. When you check your instrument, work by ear and by note name rather than by position, and note down which physical field gave which reading.

Checking yours without damaging it

  1. Strike softly, with a fingertip. Not the palm, not hard. You want a clean fundamental for the tuner, and you are also not trying to add to whatever drift already exists.
  2. Take one field at a time and let it ring. Damp the others lightly with your free hand — a handpan is designed to resonate sympathetically, which is lovely to play and unhelpful to measure.
  3. Read the note, the octave and the cents.Write all three down, with today’s date.
  4. Look for a pattern rather than a number. A single field a few cents off is unremarkable. Several fields drifting the same direction, or one field whose reading refuses to settle while the note is still ringing, are the findings worth acting on.
  5. Repeat every few months. The comparison is the useful part. A drift of a few cents means nothing on its own and a great deal if it has doubled since spring.

Other scales

D Kurd dominates, but handpans are built in hundreds of scales — Celtic, Amara, Hijaz, Integral and many more — each a fixed selection of notes chosen by the maker before the steel was ever hammered. That is worth stating plainly because it changes what “in tune” means: a handpan cannot be moved to another scale, so the scale you bought is the scale you own.

The dial here is fully chromatic, so it will name whatever your instrument sounds regardless of scale. What it cannot do is tell you which scale you have — for that, play each field in order and write down the notes. What the needle can and cannot settle

On most instruments a tuner is a repair tool. Here it is a diagnostic one, and that is the distinction worth holding onto: it answers “has this changed, and how much?”, not “how do I fix it?”

There is also a limit in what a fundamental-tracking tuner can see. It reads the fundamental of a field, but much of a handpan’s character is in whether the octave and twelfth agree with that fundamental — and a field can read dead centre while sounding wrong because its upper partials have drifted. Frequently asked questions

Can I tune a handpan myself?

No, and this is the rare case where the honest answer is simply do not try. A handpan note is not one pitch but three tuned partials — the fundamental, an octave and a twelfth — hammered into a single tone field so they line up. Makers spend years learning to move one without wrecking the others, and they work with strobe tuners and shaped hammers. A misplaced strike can detune the neighbouring fields, kill a field’s sustain, or leave a dent that cannot be worked out, on an instrument that typically cost several thousand. A tuner tells you whether yours has drifted and by how much; a maker is who fixes it.

What are the notes of a D Kurd handpan?

Because neighbouring tone fields interact, and putting consecutive scale notes next to each other would make them fight. Handpans alternate low-left, low-right, next-left, next-right as they ascend, so any two adjacent fields are a third or more apart rather than a step. That spacing keeps the fields acoustically separated and it also puts the notes under your hands in a way that suits playing with both hands at once. It does mean a note map is not a clock face, and counting round the shell will not give you the scale in order.

Can a handpan actually go out of tune?

Yes, gradually, and it is normal rather than a defect. The steel relaxes over time as the stresses hammered into it settle, so a new instrument often drifts most in its first year and then stabilises. Playing hard accelerates it; so does dropping it, sitting on it, stacking things on it, or leaving it somewhere very hot. What that drift usually sounds like is not a wrong note but a loss of clarity — the partials within a field stop agreeing, so the note sounds duller or slightly beaty rather than obviously flat.

How do I check mine with a tuner?

Strike each field on its own, softly, with a fingertip rather than hard with the palm, and let it ring. Read the note and the octave, then compare against the scale your instrument was made in. What you are looking for is a pattern: one field a few cents off is unremarkable, while several fields drifting the same way, or one field that reads unstable while it sustains, are the signs worth acting on. Write the numbers down with the date. That record is exactly what a tuner will want to see if you eventually send it away.
