No frets, no valves, no fixed stops

A standard tenor trombone sets pitch with two things working together: the slide, a continuously variable length of tubing with no marked stops, and the player’s embouchure— lip tension and air speed choosing which harmonic (“partial”) rings within that tube length. Seven slide positions are the convention, not a mechanical limit; the tube length between them, and the harmonics available at each one, are genuinely continuous. That is the whole reason trombone intonation is famously hard and famously flexible in the same breath.

Where the pitch actually comes from

Slide position sets the tube’s overall length, which fixes the spacing between available harmonics but not which one you hear — that part is embouchure. Longer tube (slide further out) lowers the whole harmonic series; each of the seven positions drops it by one semitone from the last, so first position (closed) gives the highest series and seventh (fully extended) gives it a tritone lower.

A second, separate slide — the main tuning slide, usually near the bell — calibrates the whole instrument at once, the way a peg calibrates one guitar string. Pulling it out flattens every position together; pushing it in sharpens every position together. It gets set once before playing, not per note. Many tenor trombones add an F attachment: a trigger, worked by the left thumb, that instantly routes air through extra tubing to drop the whole instrument to F. It exists to reach low notes the plain slide can’t without extreme extension, and to offer closer-in alternate positions for fast passages — and it carries its own independent tuning slide.

Calibrating slide position, step by step

  1. Start in first position, slide fully closed. Play the open B♭ (4th partial) and check it against the tuner. Correct any offset with the main tuning slide, not the playing slide — you’re calibrating the instrument, not moving to a different note.
  2. Walk down through all seven positions, playing the same partial each time (see the position chart above), and note where your slide actually lands versus where the marks — if your horn has any — suggest. Arm length varies, so your true position 4 may sit a little differently than someone else’s.
  3. Where a note has more than one usable position, check both and use whichever reads truer on your instrument for fast or legato passages, instead of defaulting to the longest slide throw.
  4. Check the F attachment separately, if you have one. Engaging the trigger reroutes air through completely different tubing with its own tuning slide, so it can drift independently of the main slide even when the main slide checks out fine.

Trombone family: sizes, keys and mechanisms

The position chart above is for the standard tenor trombone in B♭. The alto trombone (E♭) sits a fourth higher with a correspondingly shorter slide and closer-together positions. A bass trombonekeeps the tenor’s B♭ fundamental but adds a wider bore, a larger bell, and usually two valves (typically F and either G♭ or D) rather than one, filling in low-register notes that a single slide can’t reach cleanly. A contrabass trombone drops a full octave below the tenor. None of that changes how this tuner reads your notes — only how far you have to reach to produce them.

A separate branch, the valve trombone, replaces the slide entirely with three piston or rotary valves, played more like a trumpet or baritone horn. Everything above about slide positions doesn’t apply to it — but the tuner itself works exactly the same way, since it only ever listens to the pitch that comes out of the bell.

Equal temperament vs. the real harmonic series

Every partial in that first-position table is a whole-number multiple of the fundamental — that’s what makes it a harmonic series. Equal temperament, which this tuner (like essentially every electronic tuner) measures against, instead divides the octave into twelve mathematically equal steps. Those two systems only line up exactly at the octave. The 3rd partial (a fifth) is close, about 2 cents sharp of equal temperament. The 5th partial is about 14 cents flat of an equal-tempered major third, and the 7th partial is about 31 cents flatof an equal-tempered minor seventh — famously the most out-of-tune note on any unvalved brass instrument. Players either avoid that partial in favor of an alternate slide position, or lip it sharp by ear; either way, a “perfect” reading against this dial on that specific note is not actually the goal a trained ear is chasing. Frequently asked questions

Is the trombone a transposing instrument? Why does the tuner just show concert pitch?

No — that’s actually the trombone’s odd-one-out feature among B♭ instruments. A B♭ trumpet or clarinet reads written notes that sound a different pitch than what’s on the page; the tenor trombone, despite also being pitched in B♭, is read and taught directly in concert pitch from bass clef. There’s no transposition to mentally undo — the note this tuner names is exactly the note on your part.

Which slide position should I check first?

First position, the open B♭ — the fourth partial of the harmonic series and the most-referenced pitch on the instrument. It’s also the note your main tuning slide calibrates against, so get it centered before trusting any other position.

I have a bass trombone with an F attachment, or a valve trombone — does this tuner still work?

Yes, it’s fully chromatic and doesn’t care how the note was produced — slide, trigger, valve, or lipped harmonic. One thing worth remembering: an F attachment routes air through its own separate loop of tubing with its own tuning slide, so it can drift out of calibration independently of the main slide even when the main slide is spot on.

A note reads right mid-phrase but sharp or flat the moment I land on it fresh. What's wrong?

Probably nothing mechanical. Slide position is muscle memory — there are no frets or valve clicks to feel for — so the first note after a rest or a long slide movement is the one most likely to land imprecise, even on a well-maintained horn. That’s ear training and repetition, not a repair, and checking it is exactly what this tuner is for.
