Half of what people call a kalimba tuning problem is not a tuning problem. The pitch is correct, the tuner agrees, and the note still arrives with a rattle behind it — a bee in a tin can, sitting underneath an otherwise clean tone. Tapping that tine with the hammer will not help. It will just move a correctly tuned note somewhere else.
The one test that tells you which problem you have
Before you touch anything, pluck the offending tine with a chromatic tuner running and watch what the needle does. There are only three outcomes, and each one points somewhere different:

That first row is the important one, because it is counter-intuitive. A buzz is loud and annoying and sounds like something badly wrong, and yet the pitch underneath it is usually perfect. The rattle is a second, separate sound: metal touching something it should not be touching, at a frequency that has nothing to do with the note.
Six things that buzz, in the order worth checking
Work down this list rather than around it. The first two account for the overwhelming majority of buzzes, and both are free to try.
- The tine is not seated flat across the bridge.This is the big one. Nudge the buzzing tine a millimetre to the left or right with the flat of the hammer and pluck again. It fixes most buzzes on most kalimbas, it takes three seconds, and it changes the pitch by almost nothing because you have not altered the tine’s free length.
- Debris under the tine. A wood shaving from the factory, a grain of grit, a crumb. Lift the tine very slightly, slide a strip of paper under it where it crosses the bridge rod, and drag the paper out sideways to sweep the gap.
- A crooked tine touching its neighbour. Sight down the row from the tip end, at eye level. The tines should be parallel with even gaps. One leaning into the next will buzz on both of them, which makes it hard to identify by ear — the eye finds it in two seconds.
- Something loose that is not a tine at all. The tuning-hammer holder, a decorative chain, the back plate, a pickup jack. These buzz sympathetically, so they ring on one or two specific notes and stay silent on the rest — which is a very good clue that the tines are innocent.
- Your thumbnail. A nail that catches the edge of the neighbouring tine on the way past produces a click-buzz that follows your playing rather than the instrument. Play the same note with the pad of the thumb: if the buzz disappears, it is technique or nail length, not hardware.
- A kinked or cracked tine.Rare, and the only one on this list you cannot fix. It comes from tapping the middle of a tine’s free length instead of near the bridge. Hold the tine up to the light and look for a bend or a hairline across the steel.
The reseat tap: the fix most people never try
If nudging sideways does not do it, the tine may be sitting on the bridge rod at an angle rather than flat against it, with a hair-width gap that opens and closes as the tine vibrates. You can settle it back down without changing the tuning:
- Tap the tine down at the bridge end — the same motion you would use to flatten it — by a small amount, deliberately taking it a little flat.
- Tap it back up to pitch from the tip end, checking against the tuner as you go.
You have finished where you started, pitch-wise, but the tine has been pressed down and re-bedded on its rod along the way. This is why a buzz sometimes disappears after an unrelated retune, and why “I tuned it and the buzz went away” is a real experience rather than a coincidence.
The paper shim — and the cost nobody mentions
The well-known fix: cut a strip of ordinary paper roughly 3 mm wide and 25 mm long, lift the tine off the bridge rod just enough to slide the strip underneath, and let the tine back down so it traps the paper. The paper fills the gap the tine was rattling in, and the buzz stops immediately.
What is usually left out is that this works by damping the tine, and damping is not free. The same contact that kills the rattle also shortens the sustain and takes some of the ring out of the note. On the long, low tines the effect is small and the trade is worth it. On the short, high tines it is very audible — they lose the bell quality that makes a kalimba sound like a kalimba and go flat and papery instead. Use the shim on the lower two thirds happily; on the top notes, exhaust every other option first.
Smoothing the bridge, carefully
If several adjacent tines buzz and nothing above helps, the bridge rod itself may have a rough patch or a burr the tines are riding on. Fine sandpaper — around 400 grit — run along the rod will take that down. Two rules: go gently, and stop the moment it feels smooth. You are removing a burr, not reshaping a part, and the bridge height is what sets the tension of every tine crossing it.
Never take sandpaper or a file to the tines themselves. A tine is a tuned steel bar; remove metal and you have changed its pitch and its seating at the same time, which converts one buzzing note into an out-of-tune buzzing note.
After the buzz: check the tuning again
Anything that moves a tine — a sideways nudge, a reseat, a paper shim — can shift its pitch slightly, and pressing one tine down in a shared clamp can nudge its neighbours too. Sweep the whole instrument with a kalimba tuner once you are finished, and read both halves of what it shows you — the letter and the digit beside it. A minute of that catches the tine you nudged further than you intended.

No, but it has a real cost and most guides do not mention it. Trapping a paper shim between the tine and the bridge rod damps the tine, which is exactly what kills the buzz — and damping also shortens sustain and dulls the tone.
